Chinese Softwood Lumber Import Witnessed Robust 17% Surge

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The Chinese Customs data suggests substantial jump in softwood lumber imports by the country during the first five months of the current year. As per data, the imports totaled 11.6 million cubic metres, significantly higher by over 17% when compared with the previous year. Meantime, the average lumber import price has dropped sharply by 11.5% year-on-year to $183 per cubic metre.

Russia continued to be the major lumber supplier, with Chinese imports from that country totaling around 7.0 million cubic metres. In terms of volumes, the shipments surged higher by more than 18% from January to May in 2019. The average price of lumber imports from Russia was $171 per cubic metre.

In second place was Canada, whose exports to China skyrocketed by 43.2% year-on-year to 2.3 million cubic metres at an average price of $190 per cubic metre. The other major suppliers were Finland and Sweden, whose supplies registered decline of over 20% each when matched with Jan-May ’18.
