U.S. Nickel Scrap Exports Collapsed in 1Q 2019

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): In accordance with the latest trade data published by the U.S. Census Bureau, the country recorded sharp 22% decline in value of exports of nickel scrap. The exports totaled $29.67 million through the first three months of the current year. This compares with the exports of $38.12 million during Jan-Mar ’18.
As per data, the primary destination of U.S. nickel scrap export was Canada. The exports to that country were valued at $20.6 million, accounting for more than 69% of all U.S. shipments. The U.S. nickel scrap exports to Canada declined sharply by 37.36% over the previous year. The second largest importer was Australia, whose imports from the U.S. totaled $1.97 million in the first three months of 2019. In third place was Japan with imports of $1.95 million. The other key export destinations were the UK ($1.83 million) and Sweden ($1.2 million).
The above five countries together accounted for nearly 93% of the total U.S. nickel scrap exports until March this year.
Meantime, the imports of nickel waste and scrap by the U.S. too have declined by almost 7% year-on-year. The imports until March this year totaled $65.86 million, down by 6.56% from $70.48 million in Jan-Mar ’18. The top five sources of import were the UK ($21.58 million), Canada ($8.67 million), Mexico ($6.8 million), Japan ($5.85 million) and Russia ($5.05 million). Almost 73% of total nickel scrap shipped to the U.S. during the initial three-month period of 2019 was from the above five foreign markets.
