U.S. Scrap Plastic Exports Witnessed Substantial Decline

The top trade destinations of U.S. scrap plastic trade were Canada, India, Hong Kong, Mexico and South Korea in that order.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): According to trade statistics published by the U.S. Census Bureau for first two months of 2019, the exports of plastic waste and scrap by the country witnessed substantial decline. The exports totaled $46.8 million through February this year, significantly down by 43% when matched with the previous year. The U.S. exports of plastic scrap had totaled $82.12 million in Jan-Feb ’18.

The top trade destinations of U.S. scrap plastic trade were Canada, India, Hong Kong, Mexico and South Korea in that order. The shipment to these top five foreign markets totaled $30.37 million, thereby accounting for approximately 65% of all U.S. shipments during the two-month period of the year.

The largest destination of U.S. plastic scrap export was Canada. The country accounted for more than 23% market share of U.S exports, importing a total of $10.95 million worth of plastic scrap. The imports by India totaled $8.55 million. In third place was Hong Kong, which imported $5.3 million of plastic waste and scrap from the U.S. The other two key destination markets were Mexico ($3.28 million) and South Korea ($2.29 million).

Meantime, the U.S. scrap plastic imports recorded an improvement of 4.8% during the initial two months of the year to $39.56 million. Mexico-the key supplier, shipped $14.68 million, accounting for nearly 37% of all U.S. imports. The other major scrap exporters to the U.S. were Canada ($7.11 million) and Italy ($2.08 million).
