Nov '18 Crude Steel Output by Middle East Region Surged 9%

The key producer, Iran, accounted for nearly 68% of the regional output, with a monthly output of around 2 Mt.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The Middle East countries reported significant surge in crude steel production during November this year. The monthly production statistics published by the World Steel Association (worldsteel) indicates that production by the region soared by over 9% when matched with the same month a year before.

The regional steel production totaled 2.944 million tonnes (Mt) in November this year. This is higher by 9.1% over the previous year. The Middle East crude steel production had totaled only 2.698 Mt in November 2017. Meantime, the regional production during the first eleven months of the year was up by 12.6% when matched with 2017, totaling 32.874 Mt as against the production of 29.912 Mt in Jan-Nov ’17. This accounted for approximately 2% of the global production.

The key producer, Iran, accounted for nearly 68% of the regional output, with a monthly output of around 2 Mt. The Iranian production was up marginally by 2.5% over the year. Saudi Arabia boosted its output by nearly 75% year-on-year from 269,000 tonnes to 470,000 tonnes. The output by the UAE too rose by approximately 4%. The only country to report reduced output over the previous year was Qatar. The output by the country dropped 7.4% to total 176,000 tonnes in November 2018.

The topmost producing countries during the initial eleven-month period of the year were Iran (22.590 Mt), Saudi Arabia (4.956 Mt) and the UAE (2.955 Mt).
