Alliance Steel Invests $20M in Gary Plant Expansion

Alliance Steel will purchase a 250,000-square-foot facility at 2700 E. 5th Ave, Gary, originally owned by Republic Steel.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Alliance Steel- a leading processor of steel coils and supplier of flat-rolled steel decided to locate its operations in Gary, Indiana, confirming its plans to move from Bedford Park, southwest of Chicago. The company plans investment of $19.7 million for setting up the expanded facility. The renovations are expected to begin early 2019. Alliance Steel expects the new plant to become operational by the beginning of 2020.

Within first three years of operation, the total employment at Gary could reach 130. The Bedford plant currently employs around 100 people.

Alliance Steel will purchase a 250,000-square-foot facility at 2700 E. 5th Ave, Gary, originally owned by Republic Steel. The investment would also cover equipping the purchased facility so as to expand its customer base in automotive, construction, agriculture, transportation, energy, material handling and appliance industries. 

Commenting on the investment, Andy Gross, President & CEO of Alliance Steel noted that the company hopes to be one of the cornerstones in creation of a new industrial cycle in the region. The positive moves by Northwest Indiana and Gary will help to recreate promising industrial area, he added.

The project is supported by conditional tax credits of up to $1.85 million by the Indiana Economic Development Corporation (IEDC). IEDC has also offered up to $150,000 in performance-based training grants and up to $900,000 in conditional tax credits from the Industrial Recovery Tax Credit (DINO) program.
