U.S. Copper Scrap Exports Surged 27% in Jan-July '18

The top five foreign markets of U.S. exports were China, Canada, South Korea, Germany and Malaysia.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The U.S. exports of copper waste and scrap surged higher by 26.71% during the first seven months of the current year. This is upon comparison with the previous year. The exports totaled around $1.9 billion in Jan-July ’18. The country had exported only $1.5 billion of copper waste and scrap through July last year.

The top five foreign markets of U.S. exports were China, Canada, South Korea, Germany and Malaysia. The combined imports by these countries totaled $1.46 billion, accounting for nearly 77% of all copper waste and scrap exports by the U.S.

The exports to China totaled $925.4 million through July this year. The country received almost 49% of total U.S exports. The exports to China were up marginally by nearly 2%. In second place was Canada with imports of $209.05 million, followed by South Korea with $135.64 million. The exports to Germany and Malaysia totaled $102.79 million and $85.63 million respectively.

The imports of copper waste and scrap by the U.S. have increased by 13.43% through July to $482.13 million. The leading sources of import were Canada, Mexico and Venezuela. The country sourced $314.54 million of copper scrap from neighboring Canada. The shipments from that country were up by nearly 9% during Jan-July ’18. The imports from Mexico and Venezuela totaled $116.72 million and $12.13 million respectively.

The above three countries accounted for nearly 92% of total supplies of copper waste and scrap to the U.S through July ’18.
