ECUA Assumes Operation of its Material Recycling Facility

The facility has quickly evolved as a regional solution for the processing of recyclables, serving approximately a dozen municipalities/entities along the Emerald Coast.

SEATTLE (Waste Advantage): Effective May 1, the Emerald Coast Utilities Authority (ECUA) assumed daily operation of its Materials Recycling Facility (MRF) located in Beulah, Florida, with an emphasis on clean, high quality commodities. The $10.6 million facility was built and launched into operation in September, 2016.  ECUA delivered notice on April 30 to its MRF operator that the Authority was terminating its operating contract.

In a seamless transition to its residential customers, ECUA began processing operations at the MRF.   Additionally, ECUA contracted with a recycling broker to provide marketing services for the recyclable commodities generated at the 53,000 sq.-ft. MRF.

The facility has quickly evolved as a regional solution for the processing of recyclables, serving approximately a dozen municipalities/entities along the Emerald Coast.  The facility is the result of collaborative efforts between ECUA and Escambia County, bringing to the region a state-of-the-art facility that has the capacity to recycle up to 55,000 tons of materials per year.

“Building this partnership has been instrumental in eliminating our reliance on outside contractors for the processing of this region’s recycling effort,” said Steve Sorrell, Executive Director of ECUA. “and we can focus on what’s really important – high-quality, clean commodities.”  ECUA’s MRF accepts all colors of glass, plastics numbered 1 through 7, Corrugated Containers, Mixed Paper/Newsprint; Aluminum & Tin Cans; Scrap Metal.
