U.S. Exports of Aluminum Waste and Scrap Surged 19% in Jan-Feb '18
The imports were down by 7% from $163.67 million in Jan-Feb ’17 to $151.95 million through the first two months of 2018.
SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): According to latest data published by the US Census Bureau, the exports of Aluminum waste and scrap by the US reported 19% surge during the first two months of the current year. On the contrary, the US aluminum waste and scrap imports registered decline of 7%, when compared with the year before. The US aluminum waste and scrap exports had surged 24% in 2017.
The exports totaled $362.78 million through February 2018, as compared with $305.42 million during the year before.
The primary destination of US aluminum waste and scrap exports was China. The exports to that country totaled $174.17 million, accounting for more than 48% of all shipments by the country. The US exports to China surged higher by nearly 7% year-on-year. In second place was South Korea with imports worth $43.96 million. The third largest importer was Canada. The exports to that country increased marginally to total $31.83 million. The other key export markets were Mexico ($25.93 million) and India ($23.63 million).

The combined imports by the above five countries totaled 83% of total American exports. The shipments to these countries amounted to $299.52 million.
Meantime, imports of aluminum waste and scrap recorded modest decline during the first two months of 2018. The imports were down by 7% from $163.67 million in Jan-Feb ’17 to $151.95 million through the first two months of 2018.
Canada was the leading supplier of aluminum waste and scrap to the US. The imports from that country totaled $92.24 million, accounting for nearly 61% of the total US imports. The Canadian exports to the US were up by nearly 12% during the two-month period. The imports from Mexico totaled $37.88 million, down by $7.91 million from the previous year. Mexico supplied nearly one-fourth of all US imports. The other major exporters were Guatemala ($2.69 million), Chile ($1.76 million) and Spain ($1.69 million). These five countries together accounted for nearly 90% of total imports of aluminum waste and scrap during Jan-Feb ‘18.
