Fire reported at scrapyard in northeast Salem
A fire Thursday morning at a large scrap-metal pile in northeast Salem sent plumes of black smoke that were visible throughout the city.
SALEM (Scrap Monster): A fire Thursday morning at a large scrap-metal pile in northeast Salem sent plumes of black smoke that were visible throughout the city.
Several Salem Fire Department units responded to the fire, which started in the middle of the pile at Cherry City Metals around 9:30 a.m., said Salem Deputy Fire Marshal Laird Case.
Firefighters were able to get the flames under control within the hour but remained at the scene to pull apart the large mound of scrap metal and old appliances and extinguish any remaining hot spots.
The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
Customers waiting to drop off scrap metal were being turned away.
