Explosion starts fire at Youngstown scrap metal plant

When crews arrived at GLG Industries off of Crescent Street, they discovered that the gas meter exploded

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WYTV) – The Youngstown Fire Department received a call Tuesday morning for an explosion and fire at a scrap metal plant.

When crews arrived at GLG Industries off of Crescent Street, they discovered that the gas meter exploded. The explosion sent pieces flying throughout the plant and started a fire.

Firefighters turned off the plant’s gas source to stop the fire.

No one was injured, but Battalion Chief Ron Russo says it was a close call.

“Extremely lucky nobody was hit. There was pieces of shrapnel that probably weighed about four or five pounds just flying through the air. It’s just amazing nobody got hurt.”

The cause of the explosion is still being investigated.
