PHOENIX (Scrap Monster): Another fire at a recycling plant, this one in far north Phoenix, was brought under control Friday morning, according to Phoenix Fire Department.
The fire in the recycling plant at the Phoenix North Gateway Transfer Station and Materials Recovery Facility in the 30200 block of North Black Canyon Highway started about 5 a.m., according to Capt. Reda Bigler, a Fire Department spokeswoman.
Cardboard caught fire inside a baler machine and got out of control, she said in an email.
Employees were evacuated without injury.
Fire crews were staying at the scene to break up the debris, Bigler said.
A couple of other fires at area recycling facilities have been in the news recently. On March 22, a multiple-alarm blaze broke out in the late afternoon at Arizona Pacific Pulp and Paper at 3209 S. 36th Street that took crews hours to extinguish.
On April 12, the there was a two-alarm fire at the International Paper recycling plant near 30th and Madison streets in Phoenix. That took firefighters 40 minutes to control.
