Indiana welcomes world's largest plastic recycling facility
Spartanburg, S.C-based International Recycling Group (IRG) is investing millions of dollars into a new plastic recycling facility
AUBURN (Scrap Monster): Spartanburg, S.C-based International Recycling Group (IRG) is investing millions of dollars into a new plastic recycling facility, which upon realization would be the world’s largest plastic recycling facility.
The massive recycling facility is being constructed in a business park in Portage, Ind. The facility will occupy the entire building which was earlier used by BP as a staging area for a major construction project at its nearby refinery in Whiting.
The new facility will be built in a 575,000-square-foot building. The company plans to spend around $70 million. The city has already approved tax incentives, which will be phased out in five years. IRG also expects to receive state-level incentives. Initial investments at the mill will total another $30 million.
According to IRG, it plans to have two streams of operations at the proposed plant. Used plastics which can be recycled will be converted to two final products. Meanwhile, non-recyclable plastics will be fed into ArcelorMittal’s Burns Harbor steel mill where they will be used as blast furnace fuel.
International Recycling Group is a team of highly experienced professionals with extensive knowledge of plastics recycling and steel production.
