Retired Advanced Disposal Services Chairman and CEO Richard Burke Inducted into NWRA Hall of Fame

Arlington, VA – The National Waste & Recycling Association (NWRA) announced that Richard Burke is the Class of 2021 inductee to its Hall of Fame. He was chosen by NWRA’s Board of Trustees from a list of distinguished finalists submitted by the association’s Awards Committee.

Burke is the former chairman and CEO of Advanced Disposal Services. His career spans more than 30 years, most recently leading Advanced Disposal through its merger with Waste Management.

“I congratulate Richard on his induction into the NWRA Hall of Fame,” stated NWRA President and CEO Darrell Smith. “He has been a steady leader in the industry during many challenges, and his induction recognizes his commitment to the industry.”

Hall of Fame inductees are selected based on scores in five categories, including recognition in the industry as a founder, pioneer, visionary or icon; enduring legacy and impact of contributions to the industry for a minimum of 25 years; steadfast values such as integrity, respect, courage, mentorship, volunteerism and inclusiveness; inspirational leadership at an NWRA service provider or supplier and on issues important to NWRA at the national, state and/or local level; and active association engagement and service as an ambassador of the industry.

“Richard Burke puts people first—their safety and well-being—and that has led people to follow him and his leadership style of doing right by customers, the community and the company. He has made solid waste a better industry, and he has left his mark on a cast of strong leaders and operators across many markets and lines of business,” said Michael E. Hoffman, managing director and group head of diversified industrials at Stifel. “Look no further than his children. Richard and his wife have a daughter and two sons who understand they should leave the world better than they found it. I am better at what I do as a result of my relationship with Richard Burke. The Hall of Fame is a rare and special group in which to belong, and Richard Burke is welcome and highly deserving of this honor.”

“Richard has personified every qualification of the Hall of Fame during his 34 years in the industry as a founder, pioneer and icon. He is universally recognized for his integrity, expertise, vision and passion for the industry,” said John Spegal, independent director, board of directors, Interstate Waste Services, Inc. “He is also universally respected by his peers, stakeholders, regulators, community and, most importantly, the people he leads. He is a rare talent. I congratulate him on his induction into the NWRA Hall of Fame.”

“I am honored to be inducted into the NWRA Hall of Fame. It is humbling to join a group consisting of the founders and leaders of our industry, and I look forward to celebrating with family and friends during WasteExpo 2022,” said Burke.
