America Recycles Day 2021: Scepter Facilities Recycle 99% of Waste During Manufacturing Process

MIAMI, OKLA. – America Recycles Day on November 15th is a key time to focus on companies that take the extra step to recycle during everyday product manufacturing processes. Scepter, the leading North American manufacturer of fuel and water containers, recycles and reuses almost 100 percent of the high-density polyethylene (HDPE) waste created in the manufacturing process of the company’s durable containers.

“As HDPE waste naturally occurs in the manufacturing process, we regrind and reuse it,” says Daniel Marshall, vice president of marketing and business development with Scepter. “We make water and fuel containers that hold anywhere from one to 14 gallons. These sturdy containers are all made of multi-layered HDPE. That’s how we can use both virgin HDPE and the regrind HDPE in the creation of the same container.”

HDPE is a lightweight, safe and durable thermoplastic. The material itself has no negative effects on the environment, which is one of the reasons Scepter uses the plastic in its manufacturing process. To make a Scepter container, several layers of HDPE create a strong, long-lasting container. These containers are used by consumers and military worldwide to safely store and transport clean water and an assortment of fuels.

Manufacturing with Less Than 1% Waste

According to Tony Cacic, site leader with Scepter in Ontario, Canada, during the manufacturing process it’s natural to have some waste. That waste is reground and used as one of the layers in the fuel or water containers.

“We manufacture both blow molded and injection molded products,” says Cacic. “The regrind is the same durable material and actually adds an ‘environmental layer’ to the construction of each container.”

Keep America Beautiful® program since 2009, America Recycles Day® started in 1997 and is traditionally held on November 15th to increase awareness of the benefits of recycling. The dedicated day encourages people to be mindful of what they consume, where and how to properly recycle, and to pledge to recycle more in their everyday lives.

Pledging to Recycle Every Day of the Year

Scepter has two manufacturing locations in North America. More than 300 employees at the plants produce millions of dependable fuel and water containers each year. The teams are dedicated to environmental practices and recycling efforts 365 days a year.

“In addition to the regrind procedures for HDPE, our facilities recycle everything from wooden pallets to the ink cartridges used in our offices,” says Loyd Qualls, site leader with Scepter in Miami, Okla. “Scrap metal is recycled. Plastic and cardboard are recycled.

“This dedication to smart manufacturing practices showcases how deeply we feel about the earth. Being a responsible manufacturer has benefits for our customers, our employees and the environment.”

Scepter fuel and water containers can be found throughout the U.S. in Walmart®, The Home Depot®, Lowe’s®, AutoZone®, Pep Boys, Amazon and Northern® Tool + Equipment stores. Visit www.scepter.com for more information.
