SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The World Steel Association (worldsteel) has released the list of top 10 steel producing nations during the month of April this year.
China topped the list, though the country’s output registered marginal decline by 1.5% over the same month a year before. The country’s crude steel output totalled 92.6 million tonnes (Mt) during the month. The cumulative output by China during the first four months of the current year totalled 354.4 Mt, modestly higher by 4.1% over the corresponding four-month period in 2022.

India’s estimated output, at 10.7 Mt, recorded a surge by 3.2% over April 2022. The country produced 43.9 Mt of steel during Jan-Apr ‘23, modestly higher by 3.0% over the previous year. Incidentally, India was one among the few countries to report year-on-year surge in output, the others being Russia, South Korea and Iran. The Japanese output dipped sharply by 3.1% during the month to total 7.2 Mt, while its output was down by 5.3% over Jan-Apr ’22 to total 28.9 Mt until April this year.
The U.S. produced 6.6 Mt during the month, down by 5.3% year-on-year. Russia is estimated to have produced 6.4 Mt, up marginally by 1.9% year-on-year. The output (in Mt) by other countries that featured in the top ten list is as follows: South Korea (5.7), Germany (3.2), Brazil (2.8), Turkiye (2.7) and Iran (3.1).
Turkiye recorded largest year-on-year dip in steel output during the month, falling significantly by 20.6% from April last year.
