SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Site Zero- the world’s biggest plant for sorting plastic packaging opened doors on 15, November, 2023 in Motala, Sweden. The grand opening ceremony was attended by Minister for Climate and Environment Romina Pourmokhtari and as many as 350 guests from Sweden and Europe.
The plant has capacity to sort up to a dozen types of plastics, including four categories of flexible plastic packaging, at a high success rate of 95%. These 12 varieties correspond to almost all types of plastic available in the Swedish packaging market. The packaging sorting plant is touted as the most efficient recycling plant in the entire European region. It must be noted that the comparable plants in the region has capacity to sort only around three to four varieties.
Swedish Plastic Recycling had invested approximately $95 million in building the state-of-the-art facility.
The Site Zero site, in its testing period, prior to the opening, had delivered record sorting efficiency of 95%. The results of the testing period confirms that plastic can now be part of the circular economy, said Mattias Philipsson, CEO of Swedish Plastic Recycling. The plant could process over 200,000 tons of plastic packaging, he added.
