World Steel Association: Topmost Producers Worldwide in May 2022

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The World Steel Association (worldsteel) has released the list of top 10 steel producing nations during the month of May this year.

China topped the list, although its output registered 3.5% decline in output over the previous year. The country’s crude steel output totalled 96.6 Mt during the month. The cumulative output during the first five months of the current year totalled 435 Mt, significantly down by 8.7% over the same period in 2021.

India’s estimated output, at 10.6 Mt, recorded significant surge by 17.3% over May 2021. The country produced 53.2 Mt of steel during Jan-May ’22, significantly higher by 6.5% over the previous year.  Incidentally, India was the only country in the list of top ten producers to report year-on-year surge in output. The Japanese output dipped 4.2% during the month to total 8.1 Mt, while its cumulative output was down by 3.5% over Jan-May ’21 to total 38.5 Mt until May this year.

The U.S. produced 7.2 Mt, down marginally by 2.6%. Russia is estimated to have produced 6.4 Mt, marginally lower by 1.4% year-on-year. The output by other countries in the top ten list in Mt is as follows: South Korea (5.8), Germany (3.2), Turkey (3.2), Brazil (3.0) and Iran (2.3).

The crude steel production by 64 countries reporting to the Association totalled 169.5 Mt and 791.8 Mt in May 2022 and Jan-May ’22 respectively.
