World Scrap Trade Witnessed Diverse Trends in September

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The scrap trade data published by various countries point to diverse trends during the month of Sep ’18.

The scrap exports by Singapore surged higher by 18.5% during the month, when compared with the same month a year before. The Sep ’18 exports totaled around 73,000 tons, as compared with the exports of nearly 62,000 tons in September last year.

The cumulative scrap exports by Singapore declined marginally by 3.5% over the previous year during the initial nine-month period of the current year. The country exported around 580,000 tons of scrap during Jan-Sep ’18. The primary export destination was India, which accounted for nearly 28% of the total Singaporean exports. Meantime, the exports to that country dropped significantly by 6.7% to around 160,000 tons during this period.

Thailand’s scrap imports dropped significantly by over 12% year-on-year to total around 180,000 tons in Sep ’18. The imports during Jan-Sep ’18 were up by 6.8% to total nearly 1.3 million tons. The largest source of imports was the U.S., which supplied around 360,000 tons of scrap to Thailand. The country accounted for nearly 28% of all imports by Thailand during the nine-month period.

The U.S. scrap exports registered marginal increase by 3.5% over the year to total around 1.38 million tons during Sep ’18. The exports by the country totaled nearly 13 million tons during Jan-Sep ’18. The single largest scrap export destination was Turkey. The exports to that country totaled around 2.69 million tons, accounting for 20.7% of the total U.S. exports. At the current pace, the U.S. scrap exports are likely to total around 17.3 million tons during the entire year 2018.
