Global crude steel output surged over 3% in October

According to the most recent statistics published by the World Steel Association, the crude steel production by 66 member countries was 136.523 million tonnes (Mt) in October this year.

Global crude steel output surged over 3% in October

BRUSSELS (Scrap Monster): According to the most recent statistics published by the World Steel Association, the crude steel production by 66 member countries was 136.523 million tonnes (Mt) in October this year, rising by 3.3% in comparison with the production of 132.128 Mt during same month a year before.

South America

The crude steel production by South American countries dropped significantly during the month of October this year. The total monthly output declined by 10.6% to 3.514 Million tonnes.

The total crude steel production by Argentina during October was 377,000 tonnes, down considerably by 19.6% in comparison with the October 2015 production of 469,000 tonnes. Brazil produced 2.720 Million tonnes of crude steel, lower by 8.8% when compared with 2.983 Million tonnes production achieved during October last year. The Chilean October crude steel production dropped sharply by nearly 9.6% to 90,000 tonnes in October this year. The total crude steel production by Colombia was down by 12% to 105,000 tonnes in October this year.

Ecuador’s crude steel output dropped significantly by nearly 30% on year-on-year basis. The crude steel output by Ecuador was 50,000 tonnes in October this year, down when compared with 71,000 tonnes during October last year.  Paraguay’s crude steel output plunged heavily by 59% during the month.

The crude steel output by Peru recorded modest rise of 12.8% year-on-year. The crude steel output of Uruguay witnessed decline of 50.2% when compared with the year before levels. Venezuelan production dropped considerably by 28.6% year-on-year from 77,000 tonnes to just around 55,000 tonnes.

North America

The crude steel production by North American countries increased marginally by 1.6% during the month of October year-on-year. The production totaled 9.122 Mt during the month.

The total crude steel production by Canada during October this year was 1.035 Mt, slightly higher by 10.5% when compared with the October 2015 production. The US produced 6.382 Million tonnes of crude steel, slightly lower by 2.5% when compared with 6.546 Million tonnes production achieved during October 2015. The total crude steel production by Mexico edged higher by 21.7% from 1.355 Mt in October ‘15 to 1.650 Mt in October this year.

The Cuban crude steel production decreased sharply by around 27.6% year-on-year to 20,000 tonnes. The crude steel output by El Salvador was estimated at 10,000 tonnes in October this year, down by over 17% when compared with October last year. Guatemala produced 25,000 tonnes in October. The crude steel output by Trinidad & Tobago nosedived to zero in October this year from 59,000 tonnes during same month the previous year.

Asia

The crude steel production by Asia rose by 4.2% during the month of October 2016 year-on-year.

The total crude steel production by China during October was 68.510 Million tonnes, rising by 4.0% when compared with the production of 65.875 Mt during October 2015. India produced 8.267 Million tonnes of crude steel, higher by 12.3% when compared with 7.359 Million tonnes production achieved during October last year.

Japan reported marginal rise of 0.6% in monthly crude steel output during the month. Japan's crude steel output was up from 9.010 Million tonnes in October 2015 to 9.062 Million tonnes in the same month this year.

South Korean crude steel production dropped slightly by 2.1% from 6.086 Million tonnes in October 2015 to 5.961 Million tonnes in October this year. Meantime, Pakistan’s crude steel output totaled 290,000 tonnes during the month.

The Taiwanese Oct ‘16 crude steel output rose 10.0% year-on-year to 1.860 Million tonnes from 1.692 Million tonnes during same month last year. Also, Thailand’s crude steel output increased by 25% from 280,000 tonnes during October last year to almost 350,000 tonnes this year.

Africa

The crude steel production by the African region marked 17.2% jump during the month of October year-on-year.

Egypt produced 380,000 tonnes of crude steel, surging higher by 17.4% when compared to 324,000 tonnes production achieved during October 2015. Libya’s crude steel output surged to 19,000 tonnes during the month of October this year, when matched with the production of 15,000 tonnes during the same month a year before. Morocco’s output surged almost 65% to 50,000 tonnes, when compared to 30,000 tonnes production achieved during October 2015. South Africa’s crude steel output increased modestly by 13.8% to 534,000 tonnes during the month when matched with the production figures of 469,000 tonnes during the same month a year before.

Other regions

The crude steel production by the Middle East region increased by over 19% during the month of October ’16 year-on-year. EU-28 region recorded marginal increase of 0.3% in crude steel output during October this year. The output by the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) too increased slightly by 0.3% during the month. Also, Oceania region recorded 6.8% jump in output.
