Work on Rex Lumber's New Pike County Sawmill to Commence Next Week

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Graceville, Florida-headquartered Rex Lumber has announced groundbreaking of its Greenfield sawmill facility in Troy, Pike County, Alabama on Tuesday, July 17, 2018 at 10 a.m. The company plans to invest approximately $110 million in capital cost, which includes startup and working capital. This is the company’s third major sawmill expansion over the past seventeen years.

The new Alabama lumber manufacturing facility is expected to produce nearly 240 million board feet of lumber annually. This will lead to significant jump in total yearly production by Rex Lumber. Currently, the company operates three sawmills-two in the Florida Panhandle and the third one in Mississippi, whose combined production amounts to 575 million board feet per annum. Along with production increase, the new sawmill is expected to create nearly 110 new direct jobs in the region.

According to Gov. Kay Ivey, the new Alabama lumber manufacturing facility will bring high-quality jobs in the area. In addition, it will lead to substantial economic benefits for lumber industry in the Pike County area. He thanked Rex Lumber for selecting Alabama for the project and committed all assistance to help the operation succeed and thrive for years to come. Commerce Secretary Greg Canfield noted that the plant will create significant new timber market and enhanced economic activity in the region.

Meantime, Rex Lumber thanked the Industrial Development Board of the City of Troy, Pike County, the Pike County Economic Development Corp., Governor Kay Ivey, Secretary of Commerce Greg Canfield, and the State of Alabama for their whole-hearted assistance in setting up the southern yellow pine sawmill in Pike County.  

Founded in 1920, Rex Lumber is owned and operated by the Finley McRae family of Graceville. The company is ranked among the 10 largest softwood lumber producers in the U.S.
