Woodstock City Council Considers Plastic Bag Ban

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Woodstock City in Ontario is considering a proposal to implement city-wide ban on use of single-use plastic bags. The proposal to this effect is currently before the Council. If approved, Woodstock could become the first city in Ontario to implement such a ban.

The Environmental Advisory Committee had recently issued a memo asking the City Council to look into implementing a ban on single-use, handled plastic shopping bags in the city. As per sources, a member of the Committee is scheduled to speak to the Council about the ban Thursday night.

The Council is expected to accept the ban recommendation in principle and forward it to staff for a detailed report. If approved, the Council aims to commence public education campaign this fall, so as to implement the ban effective Jan 1, 2020. The Council will model Woodstock’s bylaw in line with laws in place in other cities across Canada.

Meantime, several domestic retailers have expressed willingness to stop using plastic bags in their establishments.
