SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) authorities imposed fine on a northeastern Wisconsin lumber company for dangerous conditions at the site years after an employee was killed while on job. A fine of $283,608 was imposed on Tigerton Lumber Company on 22, December, 2023 following site inspections in July last year.

According to the federal safety regulator, the inspection revealed violations of multiple regulations. There were inadequate guards on machines, stairs without railings and open electrical boxes. The conveyors were not fenced off or properly marked as prohibited areas. The site also failed to provide adequate warning signals to prevent employees from entering dangerous areas.
The follow-up inspection in July 2023 was part of a program implemented by the regulator to monitor severe violators. The company, which currently employs nearly 60 workers, was categorised as a ‘severe violator’ following the death of a 46-year old employee while working with logging equipment in 2018. The inspection cited the company for three repeat violations, 14 serious violations and two other-than-serious violations.
Meantime, the company has not yet officially responded to the charges.
