WFP's First Sustainability Report Highlights Ambitious Goals

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Vancouver, B.C.,-based Western Forest Products (WFP) announced publication of its first sustainability report. The report highlights the company’s governance, environmental and social practices and performance during the previous year. It tracks progress and set goals on key performance measures.

The company achieved several important milestones in 2018. WFP built a 3D model of our Individual Tree Inventory through the use of LiDAR technology. It sold the ownership interest in one of its forest operations to the Huu-ay-aht First Nations. The company also launched Western Learning-an online training system to support its employees’ growth. In addition, it also enhanced its Health & Safety Management System to provide better protection to its workers in support of its target of zero-incident workplace.

The company employed 2,282 people across various facilities located in Canada, the U.S., Japan and China, with majority of workers in the Vancouver Island, British Columbia. Including direct and contract employees, the company employs nearly 3,700 people.

WFP gives top priority to safety, which is clearly evident from the significantly low medical incident rate of 3.17 in 2018. The company upheld highest safety standards at all of its facilities throughout the year, the report noted.

The company adhered to some of the most stringent forest management standards in the world, as regulated by the Government of British Columbia. In a bid to reduce own carbon and waste footprint, it has re-grown trees on every hectare harvested by it.
