WEEE Forum Celebrates Success of Second International E-Waste Day

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The International E-Waste Day, which took place on October 14th was a huge success, said organizer WEEE Forum- an international consortium of e-waste collection schemes.

The day brought together stakeholders across the globe in organizing campaigns aimed at raising awareness about the mounting e-waste problem and methods to tackle the same. The campaigns focused on safe disposal of used electronics and the opportunities for reuse and recycling. For the first time, the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) also became a partner of the event.

The WEEE Forum highlighted the need for recycling all the electronic waste where it cannot be avoided. At the same time, the industry must rethink on the options for reusing the electronic and electrical equipment, wherever possible. As per estimates worldwide e-waste generation is likely to touch 50 million tonnes by the end of the current year. The current global e-waste recycling rate of just over 20% implies that around 40 million tonnes of e-waste ends up in landfills, incinerated or dumped into other countries where they are treated using primitive techniques.

WEEE Forum organized diverse initiatives such as conferences, collection events, online guides, videos and animations. These initiatives carried out in partnership with member organizations were successful in increasing consumers’ knowledge about e-waste and available options towards its safe disposal.
