WasteCare Opened UK's First Full-Scale Battery Recycling Plant

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster):  Recycling firm WasteCare announced opening of new battery recycling plant in Elland, a few miles south of Halifax, following approval by the Environment Agency. The £2 million facility is UK’s first full-scale household battery recycling facility.

The fully automated plant will have capacity to handle up to 25,000 tonnes of household batteries every year. This means that the plant will be capable of recycling all of the UK’s spent alkaline and zinc carbon batteries, thus allowing them to be treated domestically instead of being shipped to mainland Europe. As per rough estimates, alkaline and zinc carbon batteries make up nearly 80% of the total batteries sold in the country.

The plant will treat batteries collected from various collection points across England, Scotland and Wales. It uses an innovative sorting process, which initially separates batteries by size and type. These are then fed to a processing unit, where they are pulverised, before being fed to a multi-staged separation and extraction process. The entire process results in separation of component materials.

Graeme Parkin, COO, WasteCare noted that the downstream process that will allow raw materials to be reused directly in battery manufacturing is at an advanced stage. The plant is expected to be operational by end-2021, he added.
