Indiana Aims for 50% Recycling Rate with Waste Management Proposal

SEATTLE (Waste Advantage): The Indiana Department of Environmental Management recently had an open house at a Johnson County Public Library branch to discuss its proposed materials management plan. The new plan aims to replace the state’s existing solid waste plan with a focus on improving access to recycling and reducing waste. The state also has a goal of achieving a 50% recycling rate.

Deanna Garner, recycling market development program manager for Environmental Management, said, “Our last plan was done in 1990. We have new materials that have emerged in our state: electronics and others. So, we need to really look at how we address those types of wastes.”
