'Glass for Europe' wants flat glass to be banned from landfill

LONDON (Scrap Monster) : ’Glass For Europe’ – the trade association for flat glass product manufacturers in Europe, has called for the glass used for windows in buildings to be completely banned from landfill.

The trade association in its report titled “Recycling of End-of-Life Building Glass” states the importance of recycling window glass used in construction. According to the report, the glass from buildings could easily be dismantled and sent to glass furnaces for proper recycling. The report says that good recycling practices would improve the resource efficiency of flat glass products.

The trade association called for the support of the EU in developing new technologies for efficient recycling of flat glass products. Moreover it recommends setting strict recycling targets. Most importantly, the lawmakers should intervene in the matter so that flat glass is completely banned from landfill.

The report states: “Glass manufacturers are ready to take back waste flat glass to be recycled into new flat glass products, provided quality specifications are met”.

Glass for Europe has four member companies: AGC Glass Europe, NSG-Group, Saint-Gobain Glass and Sisecam-Trakya Cam, and works in association with Guardian. Altogether, these fives companies represent 90% of Europe's flat glass production.
