U.S. Steel Recycled 3 Million Tonnes of Steel Scrap Last Year

As per estimates, the company has successfully recycled 7.5 million tons of materials including 2.9 million tons of scrap steel to create new steel products during the previous year.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): U.S. Steel has announced publication of its Sustainability Report 2017. The report highlights the renewed commitment to sustainability efforts. It also outlines the various innovative measures undertaken by the company facilities towards achieving highest sustainability levels.

According to the report, U.S. Steel is the only American steel maker to produce third generation Advanced High Strength Steel (AHSS) for automotive industry. These products are mainly used in manufacture of lightweight yet strong vehicle body parts, leading to high fuel efficiency and enhanced safety.

The company operations focus on maximum reuse and repurpose of materials. U.S. Steel is one of the major recyclers of scrap steel in the country. As per estimates, the company has successfully recycled 7.5 million tons of materials including 2.9 million tons of scrap steel to create new steel products during the previous year.

U.S. Steel continued to be a leader in exemplary safety practices. The company performed nearly 89% better than its peers when compared with the serious injury cases for Iron and Steel sector as reported by the U.S. Bureau of labor Statistics (BLS) in 2016. The series of safety training and awareness campaigns across various sites have resulted in tremendous decline in injury rates and casualties. In 2017 alone, the company conducted more than 300,000 hours of training in various disciplines such as safety, job skills and leaderships.

David B. Burritt, President and CEO of U. S. Steel noted that the company is extremely proud of its employees’ accomplishments. U.S. Steel plans to build on them as part of its commitment to continuous improvement, he said. For instance, the company plans to establish a greenhouse gas emissions reduction goal by the end of next year. Furthermore, he thanked each and every employee for their hard work and sustainable improvements.
