U.S. Steel Mill Shipments in August Surged 6.5%

The cumulative steel shipment by U.S. mills during the initial eight-month period of 2018 rose by 4.6% over the previous year to total 63.657 million net tons.

U.S. Steel Mill Shipments in August Surged 6.5%

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The shipment of steel by the U.S. mills surged higher significantly during the month of August this year, said the latest statistics published by the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI). This is upon comparison with August 2017. The shipments recorded notable increase over the prior month as well.

During August 2018, the U.S. steel mills shipment totaled 8.442 million net tons. This is higher by 6.5% when compared with the shipments of 7.929 million net tons during the same month last year. The shipments were up by 6.7% over the previous month. The U.S. steel mills shipment had totaled 7.911 million net tons in July this year.

The shipment volumes of hot dipped galvanized sheets and strips reported biggest jump over the prior month, climbing higher by 11%. Also, the shipments of cold rolled sheets and hot rolled sheets were up by 3% each.

The cumulative steel shipment by U.S. mills during the initial eight-month period of 2018 rose by 4.6% over the previous year to total 63.657 million net tons, said AISI data. The shipments by mills had totaled only 60.868 million net tons during the corresponding eight-month period last year.

Meantime, the U.S. domestic raw steel production recorded notable jump during the week ending on October 6, 2018. The weekly steel production represented 8.5% increase over the previous year to total 1.851 million net tons. The mill capability utilization rate too was up from 73.2% to 79% over the year.
