U.S. Steel Restarts Gary Works Furnace Operations

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Pittsburgh-based steelmaker U.S. Steel announced that it expects to restore the blast furnace operations at its Gary Works mill.

On Wedesday, the company had reported leak in a pipe that brings water to cool furnaces and other steel-making equipment. This had resulted in flooding at the facility, near to blast furnace operations. As a precaution, the company had stopped operation of blast furnaces, on fears that exposure of super-heated metal to cold water could lead to explosions. Crews have been working for past several days to remove the water.
