US Steel confirms layoffs; blast furnace at Mon Valley Works temporarily idled

U.S. Steel announced layoffs and the immediate idling of a blast furnace at the Mon Valley Works after reporting a first-quarter loss of $391 million Thursday.

Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) notices were sent to 6,500 workers throughout the company, but U.S. Steel spokeswoman Meghan Cox said the actual number of layoffs was expected to be about 2,700.

"The company will temporarily idle #6 blast furnace at Gary (Indiana) Works and #1 blast furnace at Mon Valley Works, effective immediately," U.S. Steel said in a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. "As a result of reduced blast furnace production, the corporation has extended coking times at Clairton Works to align coke production with steel production."

U.S. Steel did not specify a number of employees at the Mon Valley Works who would be impacted.

"There is not a significant number of layoffs at the Mon Valley Works to trigger WARN notices," Cox said.
