U.S. Scrap Plastic Exports Declined Drastically

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The latest U.S. Census Bureau data suggests significant decline in exports of scrap plastic by the country during the initial seven-month period this year. This is when compared with the corresponding period a year before. The imports of the material by the country too were down year-on-year.

The U.S. exports pf plastic waste and scrap recorded year-on-year decline by over 42%. The exports were valued at $174.48 million through Jan-July '19, as compared with $302.2 million during the corresponding period in 2018. The category was ranked 485 among the various export commodity groupings.

The top destination of exports was Canada. The exports to that country recorded marginal decline by 2.56% over the previous year to total $39.13 million. Canada accounted for 22.43% of all shipments of scrap plastic by the U.S until July this year. The second largest importer was India, whose imports totaled $29.13 million. In third place was Hong Kong with $17.54 million worth of imports from the U.S. The other key foreign markets were Mexico ($12.01 million) and Taiwan ($9.72 million). The above countries together accounted for nearly 62% of the total shipments of plastic scrap by the U.S. during Jan-July '19.

The U.S. imports of plastic waste, scrap decreased 4.03% through July this year to $134.6 million. The top sources of import were Mexico ($48.78 million), Canada ($28.73 million), Honduras ($7.12 million), Germany ($6.1 million) and Japan ($5.19 million).
