US Raw Steel Production Declined Marginally in YTD 2018

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The US domestic raw steel production during the week ending March 10th this year, declined marginally when compared with the prior week. However, the weekly production was up by nearly 5.7% when matched with the production during the corresponding week last year.

The country’s raw steel production totaled 1.813 million net tons in the week ending March 10th, 2018. The US domestic steel mills reported a capability utilization rate of 77.8% during the week.

The current week production has dropped marginally by 1.1% over the prior week. The domestic raw steel production had totaled 1.834 million net tons during the week ending March 3rd this year. The capability utilization rate too declined from 78.7% over the previous week. Meantime, the weekly raw steel output surged higher by 5.7% over the previous year. The US production had totaled only 1.716 million net tons during the week ending March 10th in 2017. The country reported significant improvement in capability utilization rates from the levels of 73.6% a year before.

The cumulative raw steel production through March 10, 2018 totaled 17.187 million net tons, down marginally by 0.2% when compared with the production of 17.221 million net tons during the corresponding period last year. The capability utilization rate edged higher slightly from 74.6% in 2017 to 74.8% this year. Southern District output totaled 686,000 net tons, followed by Great Lakes with 681,000 net tons.

The US domestic production has been lackluster over the past several years. The production had totaled 90m US tons, significantly down by 17% from 2007, when production had touched record high. Year-on-year, the US had recorded 3% jump in domestic steel production in 2017.

The effects of Trump’s imposition of tariffs on imported steel need to be watched in the forthcoming weeks and months.
