U.S. Raw Steel Output Surged 10.3%

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The weekly raw steel production statistics published by the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) suggests notable surge in domestic output by the U.S. mills during the week ending October 13, 2018, upon comparison with the corresponding week a year before. The production witnessed marginal jump over the prior week too.

According to AISI statistics based on weekly production tonnage provided by U.S. steel mills, the raw steel production totaled 1.881 million net tons during the week ending on October 13, 2018, at a capability utilization rate of 80.2%. The weekly production edged higher by 1.6% when compared with the prior week. The previous week production had totaled 1.851 million net tons at a capability utilization rate of 79.0%. The weekly production represented 10.3% surge over the previous year. It must be noted that the output had totaled only 1.705 million net tons during the year-ago week. The capability utilization rate then was 73.2%.

The year-to-date production through October 13, 2018 totaled 74.201 million net tons, higher by 4.8% upon comparison with the production of 70.836 million net tons during the same period last year. The capability utilization rate surged higher significantly from 74.3% to 77.6% over the year.

The production in the Great Lakes totaled 650,000 net tons, accounting for nearly 35% of the total weekly production. The other primary regions along with their output are as follows: North East (221,000 tons), Midwest (211,000 tons), Southern (725,000 tons) and Western (74,000 tons).
