U.S. Raw Steel Production Soared 1.3%

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The weekly statistics published by the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) suggests marginal rise in raw steel production over the previous week. Meantime, the production was down substantially when compared with the same week a year before.

The U.S. raw steel production totalled 1.206 million net tons in the week ending on May 30, 2020. This compares with the production of 1.191 million net tons during the previous week. The production has risen by 1.3% week-on-week. The production during the most recent week was down almost 36% from the prior year week. The country’s raw steel production had totalled 1.880 million net tons in the week ending May 30, 2019.

The capability utilization rate at U.S. mills during the week was 53.8%. This compares with 80.8% in the same week a year before and 53.2% in the prior week.

The adjusted year-to-date production totalled 34.296 million net tons through May 30, 2020, which is down by more than 16% from 40.858 million net tons produced during the comparable period in 2019. Over the year, the capability utilization rates too dropped substantially from 81.4% to 69.3%.

The Southern region production totalled 524,000 net tons, followed by Great Lakes with 406,000 net tons. The Midwest and North East region produced 121,000 net tons and 100,000 net tons respectively. The Western region recorded 55,000 net tons production.
