U.S. Raw Steel Output Recorded Notable Surge

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The domestic raw steel production by U.S. mills during the most recent week surged higher upon comparison with the prior week and the previous year. The year-to-date production too stood higher over the previous year.

In accordance with weekly production statistics published by the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI), raw steel production totalled 1.923 million net tons during the week ended January 11, 2020. The mill capability utilization rate during the week was 82.5%. The production surged higher by 2.8% from the corresponding week a year ago. The production had totalled only 1.871 million net tons in the week ending January 11, 2019. The capability utilization rate then was 80.4%.

The production during the recent week is up by 1.3% from the prior week ending January 4, 2020, when production had totalled 1.898 million net tons at a capability utilization rate of 80.4%.

The year-to-date production, at 3.008 million net tons, was up marginally by 2.3%, compared with the prior year. Through January 11, 2019, the domestic mills had recorded a production of 2.941 million net tons.

Southern region topped with a production of 721,000 net tons, closely followed by Great Lakes region, whose production had totalled 677,000 net tons.
