U.S. Raw Steel Output Recorded Notable Decline

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster):  The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) published domestic raw steel output data for the week ending on July 4, 2020.

The production totalled 1.268 million net tons in the week. This is substantially lower by 31.6% from the corresponding week a year before. The production had totalled 1.854 million net tons in the week ending on July 4, 2019. The capability utilization rate too recorded year-on-year decline from 79.7% to 56.6%.

Upon comparison with the prior week, the recent week’s production edged higher marginally by 2.3%. As per data, the raw steel production had totalled 1.240 million net tons in the week ended June 27, 2020. The mills had reported lower capability utilization rate of 55.4% in the prior week.

The year-to-date production through July 4, 2020 totalled 40.638 million net tons at a capacity utilization rate of 67.0%. This is substantially lower, compared with the year ago period. The raw steel production had totalled 50.167 million net tons at a capability utilization rate of 81.2% in the corresponding period last year. The production witnessed substantial year-on-year decline by approximately 19%.

The details of steel produced in the country, broken down by districts in net tons are as follows: North East (139,000), Great Lakes (420,000), Midwest (118,000), Southern (532,000) and Western (59,000).
