US plastics scrap exports slip by 0.6% to 1.43 million tonnes

The US plastics scrap exports dropped slightly during the initial eight month period in 2015. The exports totaled 1.43 million tonnes,0.6% lower over the previous year.

US plastics scrap exports slip by 0.6% to 1.43 million tonnes

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The latest export statistics released by the US Census Bureau and US International Trade Commission indicates that overall plastics scrap export by the country dropped slightly by 0.6% during the initial eight months of the year. The plastics scrap export by the country totaled 1.43 million tonnes as compared with the exports of 1.44 million tonnes during the corresponding eight-month period in 2014.

The plastics category that witnessed significant decline in export volume was vinyl chloride scrap. The vinyl chloride scrap exports dropped 21.4% year-on-year to 136, 362 tonnes during the eight-month period of the current year. The exports of PET scrap dropped significantly by nearly 17% to 208,044 tonnes. This is when compared with the exports of 250,323 tonnes during January to August last year. Also, styrene scrap exports registered decline of nearly 16% to 16,323 tonnes. The exports of ethylene scrap totaled 485,192 tonnes. The exports dropped marginally by 1.3% when matched with the previous year.

The decline in exports of above categories was balanced by rise in exports of ‘other plastics’ category of plastics scrap. The ‘other plastics’ exports were up by 16.1% to 584,235 tonnes.

The total value of export of US plastics scrap amounted to $574 million. The value of plastics scrap exports fell sharply by over 8% when compared with the value of $624 million recorded during Jan-Aug ’14.

The US plastics scrap export to China dropped by 21% over the previous year. The exports to Indonesia tumbled by 41%, whereas those to South Korea slumped by 33%. Also, plastics scrap shipment to India dropped by 8%. On the other hand, overseas shipments to Vietnam surged higher by 22%. The US plastics scrap exports to Hong Kong and Canada too increased by 17% and 4% respectively.
