SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The recent statistics published by the U.S. Census Bureau suggests marginal increase in exports of paper and paperboard scrap by the country during the initial three-month period in 2019. The exports were up by just over 5%. Meantime, the imports recorded moderate decline of almost 9%, when compared with the previous year. The exports totaled $788.45 million, edging higher by 5.11% over the previous year. The exports had totaled $750.11 million during the corresponding three-month period in 2018.
China continued to remain as the top export destination despite 11.3% year-on-year decline in export volumes. The exports to China totaled $267.73 million. The other key importers of U.S. paper and paperboard scrap were India ($132.75 million), Mexico ($100.20 million), Indonesia ($54.11 million) and South Korea ($45.43 million). More than 76% of all exports by the U.S were to the above five countries. The combined imports by the top five foreign markets totaled $600.22 million out of the total $788.45 million.
The U.S. paper and paperboard scrap imports totaled $30.26 million in Jan-Mar ’19. The imports recorded 8.87% decline from the previous year. The country had imported paper and paperboard scrap worth $33.2 million during the initial three-month period in 2018. Through March this year, Canada was the leading source of import. The imports from Canada totaled $29.15 million, accounting for over 96% of the total imports of paper and paperboard scrap by the U.S. The other primary exporters to the U.S. were Mexico ($974,883) and China ($69,423).
