U.S. Nickel Scrap Exports Dipped 13%

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The U.S. exports of nickel waste and scrap registered huge decline during the initial five-month period of the current year. The latest trade data published by the U.S. Census Bureau indicates that the exports collapsed by over 13% during this period. This is upon comparison with the same period a year before. The exports were valued at $44.52 million as compared with $51.29 million a year before.

Through May this year, the top trade partner of the U.S. was Canada. The nickel scrap exports from the U.S. to Canada totalled $21.6 million. The exports to Canada witnessed huge decline by nearly 37% over the previous year. The second largest destination of exports was Japan, whose imports from the U.S. totalled $6.33 million. In third place was the UK with imports of $5.52 million. The other key export destinations were Australia ($3.70 million) and Germany ($2.02 million).

The U.S. imports of nickel scrap recorded a year-on-year decline of 15.83% in Jan-May ‘20. The imports dropped from $127.56 million to $107.37 million through the first five months of 2020. The leading sources of import were the UK ($30.46 million), Canada ($12.75 million), Russia ($10.91 million), Japan ($9.25 million) and Mexico ($9.10 million). These five countries together supplied more than 68% of all nickel waste and scrap imported by the U.S. during Jan-May ‘20.
