U.S. Exports of Nickel Scrap Surged 40% in Jan-Aug '18

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): According to statistics published by the U.S. Census Bureau, the country witnessed substantial jump in exports of nickel waste and scrap through August this year. The imports too skyrocketed, when compared with the corresponding eight-month period in 2017.

The U.S. exports of nickel waste and scrap totaled $112.44 million through Aug ’18, significantly higher by 39.69% from the previous year. The exports had totaled only $80.5 million in Jan-Aug ’17.

The key destination market for U.S. nickel scrap exports was Canada. The country received just fewer than 80% of all U.S. exports during the eight-month period. The imports by Canada surged higher significantly by almost 46% over the previous year to total $89.17 million. The exports to Japan more than doubled to $6.56 million. In third place was the UK with imports totaling $5.84 million. Sweden ($2.93 million) and Australia ($2.28 million) were the other major importers of nickel scrap from the U.S.

The U.S. imports of nickel waste and scrap too were up sharply by 74.26%, totaling $220.32 million, as compared with $126.43 million during Jan-Aug ’17. The top five sources of import were the UK, Russia, Canada, Germany and China. These five countries accounted for 63.22% of all U.S. imports. The combined supplies from these countries totaled $139.28 million until August this year.
