U.S Exports of Aluminum Scrap Surged 21% in H1 2018

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The latest statistics published by the U.S. Census Bureau signals significant jump in exports of aluminum waste and scrap by the country during the initial six-month period of the current year. The exports totaled $1.24 billion, higher by 20.65% when matched with the exports during the corresponding half-yearly period in 2017. The U.S. exports of aluminum scrap had totaled $1.03 billion in Jan-June ’17.

The top trade partner through June this year was China. The exports to China totaled $486.26 million, accounting for 39.31% of all U.S. shipments. Over the previous year, the exports to China declined by nearly 9%. The second largest destination of exports was South Korea. The U.S. exports to that country recorded 44.42% year-on-year jump to total $159.39 million. The other key foreign markets were India ($113.35 million), Canada ($105.23 million) and Mexico ($103.46 million).

The exports to the above five countries totaled $967.7 million, representing over 78% of all the exports from the U.S. during H1 2018.

Meantime, the imports too were up by 6% to $544.82 million. Through June this year, the top source of import was Canada, which supplied more than 58% of all imports. The U.S. imports from Canada totaled $316.71 million. The other major suppliers of aluminum scrap to the U.S. were Mexico ($148.05 million), Guatemala ($11.57 million), Chile ($5.22 million) and Brazil ($4.88 million).
