U.S. Exports of Aluminum Scrap Surged 11% Through Nov '18

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The U.S. Census Bureau data suggests significant uptick in exports of aluminum scrap by the country during the first eleven months of the previous year. The exports through Nov ’18 surged higher by 10.86% when compared with the prior year. The exports were up from $2.03 billion to $2.25 billion.

The top foreign market of U.S. aluminum scrap exports was China. The country received $667.21 million worth of the material from the U.S., thereby accounting for nearly 30% of all shipments. However, the shipments to China declined sharply by 37% upon comparison with the corresponding eleven-month period in 2017.

The second largest export destination was South Korea, which imported $308.25 million worth of aluminum scrap from the U.S. The exports to that country witnessed huge surge by 42% over the year. In third place was India, whose aluminum scrap receipts from the U.S. skyrocketed by 173% year-on-year to total $271.69 million. The other key importers were Mexico ($195.42 million) and Malaysia ($193.95 million).

Meantime, the imports of aluminum waste and scrap by the country too recorded modest increase by 9.73% through November in 2018 to $1.02 billion. The imports had totaled only $929.59 million in Jan-Nov ’18. The top five sources of import were Canada ($600.25 million), Mexico ($276.78 million), Guatemala ($19.51 million), Venezuela ($10.47 million) and Brazil ($8.51 million).
