U.S. Containerboard Production Surged 4%

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The American Forest and Paper Association (AF&PA) released Containerboard monthly report for September 2020.

According to the report, total containerboard production in September increased by 4% compared with the same month a year before. The production of containerboard for export during the month recorded 12% decline over the previous year. The containerboard operating rate, at 95.9%, was up by 3.7% from the prior year. The mill inventories at the end of the month recorded a decline of 67,000 short tons from the prior month. Upon comparison with September 2019, the mill inventories were up by 25,000 short tons.

The containerboard production during the initial nine-month period of the year surged higher by 4%. The production for export stood higher by 2.8% until September this year. The operating rate during Jan-Sep ’20 too was up by 2.8% year-on-year.

Meantime, the U.S. boxboard production in September this year saw 6% decline over the previous year. Over the nine-month period, it witnessed 3% decline. The boxboard operating rate for the month was 88.3%. The recycled board production declined marginally by 1%.The production of solid bleached boxboard and unbleached craft & gypsum recorded decline by 11% and 4% respectively, when compared to September 2019.
