U.S. Containerboard Production Recorded 4.2% Surge

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The latest monthly report published by the American Forest and Paper Association (AF&PA) indicates significant jump in U.S. containerboard and boxboard production during the month of July. The total packaging paper shipments were up by 5.7% in July.

AF&PA reported significant momentum in total U.S. boxboard production in July. When compared with the same month a year before, the July ’18 total boxboard production increased by 1.9%. Over the prior month, the output grew strongly by 4.1%. The unbleached kraft boxboard production edged lower when compared with the previous year, but was up marginally from the prior month. The Solid Bleached Boxboard and Liner production increased. Also, the production of recycled-content boxboard too increased over the prior month and previous year, AF&PA report said.

The U.S. containerboard production climbed higher by 4.2% over the previous year. The combined production during the initial seven-month period in 2018 was marginally higher by 1.5% when compared with Jan-July ’17. The average daily production was higher by 3.8% when compared with the prior month. The containerboard operating rate at 99.4% was 2.5% higher than the same month a year before. Also, containerboard production for export hit the highest level of 2018.

The U.S. total packaging paper shipments surged higher by 5.7% from July 2017. The year-to-date shipments were up marginally by 1.3% over the previous year. The category to witness highest rise in shipments year-on-year was food wrapping bags, whose shipments surged higher by 3.1%. The bag and sack shipments during Jan-July ’18 grew by 2.5%. Multiwall shipments dropped slightly by less than 1%, whereas the converting shipments remained essentially flat. The operating rates increased to 95.9% during the month.
