U.S. Containerboard Output Recorded Rapid Surge

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The American Forest & Paper Association (AF&PA) released its U.S. Boxboard Report for the month of February 2020. The total U.S. boxboard production recorded marginal decline by 1%, as compared to February last year. The boxboard operating rate stood at 93.7%. The recycled boxboard production has increased by 2% during the month.

The containerboard operating rate was 93.4%, up 3.1% from February 2019. The Feb ‘20 containerboard production for export registered notable increase by 55% over the same month a year before. The containerboard mill inventories have surged higher by 29,000 short tons from the previous month. When compared with February last year, the inventories were   up by 44,000 short tons. The total containerboard production during the month was up by 10%.

Meantime, AF&PA reported 2% jump in total packaging papers & specialty packaging shipments. The operating rate was down 1.0% to 86.9%. The mill inventories remained essentially flat from the month before. Upon comparison with the prior year levels, the inventories were down by nearly 6,000 short tons.

The total printing-writing paper shipments dipped 5% in February this year. The inventory levels have increased by 1% when compared to January 2020.
