U.S. Census Bureau Signals Marked Decline in Nickel Scrap Exports

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The U.S. exports of nickel waste and scrap registered substantial decline during the first six months of the current year. The half-yearly trade data published by the U.S. Census Bureau indicates that the exports declined by nearly 19% during this period, when compared with the prior year. The Jan-June ’20 exports were valued at $49.82 million as compared with $61.49 million a year before.

Until June this year, the top trade partner was Canada. The nickel scrap exports from the U.S. to Canada totalled $23.42 million. The country accounted for nearly 47% of all U.S. shipments. In third place was the UK with imports of $5.74 million. The other key export destinations were Australia ($4.03 million) and Germany ($2.44 million).

Meantime, the U.S. imports of nickel scrap too recorded a year-on-year decline by approximately 23% in the first six months of 2020. The imports totalled $119.83 million. The top five sources of import were the UK ($35.12 million), Canada ($14.11 million), Russia ($13.98 million), Japan ($9.58 million) and Mexico ($9.56 million).
