U.S. Census Bureau Posted Notable Decline in Paperboard Scrap Exports

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The recent statistics published by the U.S. Census Bureau suggests modest decline in exports of paper and paperboard scrap by the country during the initial five-month period in 2020. The exports dropped nearly 30%. Meantime, the imports too recorded sharp decline of almost 36%, when compared with the previous year.

The exports totalled $907.69 million in Jan-May ‘20. The U.S. exports had totalled $1.29 billion during the corresponding five-month period in 2019.

China continued to remain as the top export destination despite 33% year-on-year decline in export volumes. The exports to China totalled $282.84 million. The other key importers of U.S. paper and paperboard scrap were India (133.49 million), Mexico ($104.43 million), Canada ($59.44 million) and South Korea ($58.88 million). Nearly 72.46% of all exports by the U.S were to the above five countries. The combined imports by the top five foreign markets totalled $1.96 billion out of the total $2.70 billion.

The U.S. paper and paperboard scrap imports totalled $29.32 million in Jan-May ‘20. The imports recorded nearly 36% decline from the previous year. The country had imported paper and paperboard scrap worth $45.72 million during the initial five-month period in 2019. Through May this year, Canada was the leading source of import. The imports from Canada totalled $27.89 million, accounting for over 95% of the total imports of paper and paperboard scrap by the U.S.
