Through Sep ’19, the U.S. imports of paper and paperboard scrap recorded heavy decline by 35%, when compared to the same period the previous year.

U.S. Census Bureau Points to 9% Decline in Paperboard Scrap Exports

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The U.S. exports of paper and paperboard scrap dropped over 9% from $2.38 billion to $2.16 billion during the initial nine months of the current year, says the latest data published by the U.S. Census Bureau. By value, the exports totalled $196.75 million for the month of September 2019.

The top trade partner during Jan-Sep ’19 was China, whose imports from the U.S. totalled $756.67 million, accounting for 35% of all U.S. shipments. The Chinese imports dropped significantly by approximately 22% from January to September last year. The second largest importer was India, which received $384.87 million worth of paper and paperboard scrap from the U.S. In third place was Mexico with $235.81 million. The other key export destinations were South Korea ($115.72 million) and Canada ($102.93 million).

According to U.S. Census Bureau data, almost 74% of all paper and paperboard scrap from the U.S. were shipped to the above five countries.

Through Sep ’19, the U.S. imports of paper and paperboard scrap recorded heavy decline by 35%, when compared to the same period the previous year. The leading sources of import were Canada, Mexico and China. The imports from Canada were valued at $64.08 million and accounted for nearly 96% of the total U.S. imports. Meantime, the imports from Mexico and China were valued at $2.53 million and $225,632 respectively.

The monthly imports by value totalled $4.93 million in September 2019.
