SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): South Africa’s mining unions announced that the country’s labour arbitration body has approved their claim to strike against Sibanye-Stillwater, following failure of gold wage negotiation with the company management. The unions, including AMCU, the NUM, Solidarity and UASA have threatened to initiate strike action at the company’s gold operations.
According to company press release, the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) has issued a certificate of non-resolution in respect of the dispute conciliation process between the company and the labour unions. It allows the unions to embark on a strike and the company to implement a lock-out period within twelve months from issuance. Any such action must be embarked only upon serving a 48 hours notice period.
Furthermore, the CCMA established rules for picketing applicable to both the company and the unions, in order to ensure that these activities are carried out in a lawful, peaceful and orderly manner, thereby avoiding acts of lawlessness, violence, intimidation or damage to property.
Meantime, Sibanye-Stillwater urged unions to reconsider the company’s wage offer and stated that it will continue to engage with the unions towards reaching a fair and reasonable settlement.
